SCOTT, MATHILDE RUBY
Originally from Amiens in France, Mathilde Ruby Scott arrived in the Yukon in 1935. During 27 years, she worked at the oldest profession in the world. More than only a house-tenant she was a pillar in the community. The newspapers of the era talked about her in very respectful terms, “Madam, beloved and appreciated by everyone.” If she was appreciated thus, it was because of her legendary generosity. She served so many banquets to the poor at Christmas time that no one was able to keep track of them!
At her death, the local newspapers rendered her great homage. However, in 1962 her pretty little two-storey house no. 233 on the 2nd Avenue in Dawson City had to close its doors because of a federal edict on prostitution. Then Parks Canada restored the building and “Ruby’s Place” became a historic site.
