RAYMOND VIOLETTE: SHE OF THE GOLDEN VOICE AND POCKETS OF GOLD
Violette Raymond was originally from France. With her sister, Maud, she sang at the Opera House in Juneau, Alaska for two years before going to the Yukon at the end of the month of March 1898. The Raymond sisters were encouraged by Max Endelman, proprietor of the Hotel Gold Hill to practice their art in the Klondike at Grande Forks. Violette became the star at Grande Forks, the second city of the Klondike after Dawson City.
To convince her to marry him, Antoine Stander, a prospector originally from Austria offered her $20,000 in gold dust, a pail full of gold nuggets and a diamond necklace which according to some, fell to her knees! Violette accepted Stander’s marriage proposal and left with him to go to the United States.
