DOGS OF THE KLONDIKE: MORE PRECIOUS THAN GOLD
There were about 4000 dogs in Dawson City during the days of the Gold Rush in the Klondike, They were used to transport passengers, the mail, wood, construction material, ore-filled grit/gravel, and other merchandise. Even after the gold rush, they played an important role in the communication between the various distant communities, and were often the faithful companions to the police during their winter patrols. The importation and the sale of dogs was a flourishing enterprise until 1900, the year that the horse replaced the dog in the transport domain.
