JACQUOT, EUGENE + LOUIS - (390 - ENGLISH)

JACQUOT, EUGENE + LOUIS (390 + ENGLISH)

THE  JACQUOT  BROTHERS: FOUNDERS  OF  BURWASH  LANDING

Originally from Alsace-Lorraine in France, Eugène and Louis Jacquot came to Canada in the 1890’s. After having worked as cooks in various regions of Canada and of the United States, the two brothers arrived in the Yukon by the Chilkoot Pass in 1898.  Once arrived in Dawson City, they survived thanks to their skill as cooks, chefs, and they also did a bit of mining.
In 1904, they took part in the gold Rush in the region of the Kluane.  They found gold and later, copper in Burwash Creek.  Near their concessions, they established a commercial stop which served as a center of fresh supplies for the regional  miners.  They named this stop, Burwash Landing and settled there.  Both married Native women of the area.  Eugène Jacquot and Ruth Dickson had five sons: Gene, Joe, Lou, Henry and Larry.
The Jacquot Brothers are amongst the first to recognize the immense potential of the Kluane district for big game hunting.  During the 1930’s and 1940’s , the two brothers built themselves a good reputation as excellent guides in the territoty.  Their climents long remember their delicious French cuisine which was served to them during their hunting trips.
The biggest island in Kluane Lake was named in honor of the Jacquot brothers.
