DAWSON CITY
The Dawson City Region
Ironically the demographic and economic decline of Dawson city brought a certain stability. The Federal Government authorized the building of an administrative building, a new Palace of Justice, a new post office, and an imposing residence for the Klondike Commissioner. The new Klondike Society was determined to make Dawson City a “respectable” city. The civil servants, the business men, the police officers, and the professionals, from the middle class, (especially their wives) all wanted to make morality their goal and they beat it to death!
The anti-vice crusades made the rules and regulations more severe concerning gaming, the sale of alcohol, and prostitution. They even expelled the “good-time girls” out of the city; they discouraged the use of the saloons for drinking receptions hoping this would happen at home; they built or renovated the churches, the schools and the hospital.
