LAROSE, OLIVIER - (402 - ENGLISH)

LAROSE, OLIVIER
Olivier Larose was originally from Quebec.  In 1897-1898 he was part of those rare seekers for gold who arrived in the Klondike by the Edmonton route, the route which was known to be rather difficult.  Once in the Yukon,, he went to the Faro region to prospect and decided to settle there. Along the Pelly River, he built himself a little house and a small commercial business which was known as Rose’s Cabin.
In September 1905, he received the visit of the naturalist, Charles Seldon who was traveling in the region to gather specimens  for American museums.  Seldon named a mountain, a river and a creek close by: Rose Mountain, Rose River, and Rose Creek the name “Larose” probably being transformed under the influence of the English-speaking American.  According to the reports of the Royal North West Mounted Police, his name was truly Larose and his birth place, Quebec.  Larose was described as a solitary man who was a good worker and respected by all. In 1913, he owned 160 acres (65 hectares) along the Pelly River.
