FONTAINE, EMMA - SISTER MARIE ZENON - (376 - ENGLISH)

FONTAINE, EMMA - SISTER MARIE ZÉNON   (376 - ENGLISH)

                SISTER MARIE ZéNON  EMMA FONTAINE
In 1888, Emma Fontaine founded the first mission of the Sisters of Saint Anne in Alaska.  In 1899, she was transferred from Juneau to Dawson City in order to take over St. Mary’s Hospital after the death of Father Judge.  She was the first superior at Dawson City, a position she held until 1909.  Then she returned to Juneau and remained there until 1917.
Emma Fontaine was, in that era, one of the rarest women to possess a mining concession.  She was, in fact, the owner of two concessions which she named “Quebec” and “Santa Maria”.  These were situated near Saint Mary’s Hospital in Dawson City. On February 26, 1907, when Emma Fontaine asked for a government subsidy, her file (or dossier) indicated that the lands had been well demarcated and that $1155.00 had been invested to develop them.
