PIERRE EDMOND GENDREAU
Father Pierre Edmond Gendreau arrived in the Yukon on June 25, 1898 as a representative from the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. He was responsible to establish catholic missions in the whole territory. He took-over Father Judge’s job and established, the first catholic school in Dawson city. Thanks to the help of the Sisters of Saint Anne, St-Mary’s School opened its doors on November 1st 1899. During the first year, the school welcomed 53 students.
On August 11, 1899, Father Gendreau purchased six lots from the L Block at Selkirk in order to build a hospital and a school. In 1901 Father Gendreau had St.-Mary’s church in Dawson City renovated, and added a pipe organ. The following year, he bought 20 acres (8 hectares) in the Dominique Creek region in order to build another Catholic church. In 1902 he was named pastor at Rat River in the North-West Territories.
