HAMEL, CHARLES, OBLAT PRIEST IN YUKON
In 1942, the population of Whitehorse had increased from 500 to 10,000. With the arrival of a massive group of workers who came to build the Alaska Highway. About twenty Oblate priests were sent into the Territories around the 1940’s.
Charles Hamel, born in Montreal in 1915, was an auxiliary chaplain in the American army from 1942-1946. On November 20, 1942, on a very cold day, he recited the Catholic prayer for the official inauguration of the Alaska Highway at Soldier’s Summit in the Kluane region.
