HISTOIRE DU YUKON (368 - ENGLISH)

HISTORY OF THE YUKON
DAWSON CITY: THE ‘BIG’ CITY

Around 1898, Dawson City was the biggest city north of San Francisco and west of Winnipeg. It was called “the Paris of the North” because of its refinement or style and its diversity of the first order. The era of the Gold Rush was in effect a period of rapid changes in all areas, which, of course, brings advantages and inconveniences. Few structures were raised and in a very short time conflicts came about.
During the summer of 1898 a committee of miners from around Dawson City had a petition circulated denouncing the corruption that ruled in the administration of the forestry and mining concessions.
