GOSSELIN, FRANCOIS-XAVIER (336- ENGLISH)

GOSSELIN, FRANCOIS-XAVIER  (336  ENGLISH)

François-Xavier Gosselin is originally from the city of Quebec in the province of Quebec. On October 7, 1898, he became an agent for the crown for wood products.  His nomination followed a report presented to Prime Minister Laurier accompanied by a petition from the Dawson City miners. These miners were complaining about the corruption that was evident in the public administration of the city. Amongst other things, they denounced the favoritism made by certain civil servants in the giving out of permits for cutting wood for use by the city of Dawson City. During these years, many French-Canadians depended for their survival on that permit to cut wood.
In August 1899, François-Xavier Gosselin became the crown’s agent, not only for the wood products, but also for lands.  From 1902, he was an assistant to the commissionaire or factor for gold, and the commissionaire for gold from 1907 to around 1912. In 1915-1916, he had his own lawyer’s  office  in Dawson City.
François-Xavier Gosselin died in Dawson City on May 28, 1916.
