DUGAS, CALIXTE AIME (334 - ENGLISH)

DUGAS, CALIXTE AIME  (334 - ENGLISH)

Calixte Aimé Dugas, originally from Saint-Remi, PQ, was the son of F.A. Dugas and Clothilde Oligny. On October 7, 1898 he was named judge of the Territorial Court for the Yukon and this was in accordance with an order from the Privy Council of Ottawa.  He replaced T.H. McGuire who was the first judge ( but only for a few months) in Dawson City.

In 1900, Judge Craig joined Judge Dugas.  The men had a lot to do to get the judiciary system in place, but after a few years, there was less work to do.  Dugas and Craig, as did many Yukonners, took long holidays in the South. In 1912, both judges retired.  Judge McCaulay replaced them and took on diverse and varied functions of authority.

During the years spent in Dawson City with his wife, Suzanne Hawkins, and his son, Jean Alphonse Aimé, Judge Dugas bought land.  On May 6, 1899, he paid $200. for  lot 14 in bloc 13 in the government residential section; this was an additional section to the City of Dawson.  He was also part of the group who on May 14, 1902 obtained 40 acres (16 hectares) of land containing veins of coal.

In a second marriage, C. A. Dugas, married Mathilda Ann Graham on July 26, in Dawson City.

A street in Dawson City was named in his honor.
