BATTLE OF BATOCHE (2A) (40 ENG -- 41 fran)

INTRODUCTION of  ST-LOUIS BOOK by George Stushnoff - Department of Secretary of State
     (part 2)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This uniquelocal history portrays the descendants of people involved in a major historical event that has had a significant impact on both the Saskatchewan and Canadian historieswith continuing overtones in current political isssues and government programs.

The "Multicultural Program" of the Department of the Secretary of the State, through which the research and writing of this book has been assisted, is working towards stronger Canada, a country where there is understanding and respect among manydifferent groups, and where all individuals can play an active role in their communitiesé This means helping individuals to explore their own identy and choose their own life-styles, encouraging people to share experiences, to change points of view and to discover one another. The aim is to increase citizen participation in a blingual and multicultural Canada.

This book provides an opportunity for individuals to rxpress themselves and share their experiences, their knowledge and their life-styles, it provides the reader an opportunity to understand and sumpathize with his neighbour and his fellowman and to sharehis dreams and the struggles to attain them. It is a history of theinteraction of tje Indians, French, English, and Métis, a once proud people who were self =sustaining through difficult times and lived in hopes and aspiration for a greater tomorrow with vision of self-determination for developing their own life-styles and self-government.

The Battle of Batoche shattered these hopes and dreams and left the prople materially and morally impoverisheds.

Many books have geen written on Louis Riel and the so called Rebellion" which is a misnomer. That épisode, in our history, in truth and freedoms or a "Liberation Movement" that ia aill continuing to-day in a peaceful fashion. This book gives the people of today an opportunity to tell their own history in their own way so that the readyer, the historian and the sociaologist, may use this raw material and draw thei own conclusions on the extent and duration of the alter-effects of historial events on the future lives of people.

Some readers of this book may find their expectation unfulfilled, however the untold stories of these people are silently giving their own message for the seeker of knowledge who stops to ponder. The people in this book have wisely chosen the positibe method to pass their legacy onto future generations so that Canada may peacefully grow in strenght and unity.
