In 1863, Joseph Agagnier of Laprairie near Montréal came to Auckland Couty with the intention of acquiring timber. Joseph had a sawmill land thus bought 500 acres of timbered crown land with the intention of establishin a village and installing the sawmill on lot 4, row 4. Between 1883 and 1893 the operation employed about twenty men, as timber cutters, loggers and mill workers.

On September 9, 1887,  Joseph married Françoise Gagné at Laprairie, Québec and together made St-Malo Auckland County their hom. From this union were born three children. Joseph-Albert on September 20, 1868, Alfred-André on May 8th, 1970, and Rose-de-Lima on August 24 1872. Joseph continued with the sawmill operation providing lumber to build and own the first local general store and lumber for the home of families. When a church in the community became necessary, Joseph provided all the lumber needed.

In 1880, Joseph had a house and barn built on lot 3, row 4, with the intention of establishing his son Alfred-André

Joseph  Agagnier was "business oriented"  and became mayor of St-Malo d'Auckland County from 1875 to 1902.

The County of Auckland census of 1851 showed a population of 14 residents while in 1891 they recorded a population of 677.

In 1893, Joseph and Françoise Agagnier gave to their son Alfred-André 213 acrtes of land along with the
buildings, animals and equipment. To their son Joseph Albert, they gave 100 acres,
the sawmill and the general store.
