LAROSE, MABEL (292 ENGLISH)
During the 1897 winter, Mable Larose, a 22 year old French-Canadian found a creative solution to help her survive during the hard times.
At the Monte Carlo hotel in Dawson City there were unusual auctions. Mable Larose offered her company to the most willing man for the winter. She then played the role of wife and housekeeper. The proposed salary was then kept by a third party until the end of her contract, then Mable banked it. Once her proposal was really established, Mable Larose standing on a bar-room counter-top was immediately “bought” for $5000.00.
