LES RELIGIEUSES EN ALBERTA (471)

Les Religieuses en Alberta (471)
---------------------------------

...de l'hôpital des Soeurs de la Miséricorde, le public complimente encore la qualité de service que les employés offrent à leurs malades;

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Mrs. Limoges’ life of dedication has been original, innovative, supportive, and rich. To begin

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">with, she gave <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-indent: -0.5in;">over 40 years of volunteer service to the McLennan Municipal Library, plus over

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-indent: -0.5in;">55 years of playing the <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-indent: -0.5in;">organ at one of the churches.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In her career as a qualified teacher of music, she always gave lessons free to one student per year who could not afford lessons. Although I’ve known her for over 30 years, she never told me nor anyone about this. It is only lately that the mother of one of these children told me this and she said that Mrs. Limoges did it every year of her career.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; line-height: 14pt;">Not only did she play the organ in her church but in all of the three other churches when the need arose such as for funerals or weddings or special situations. And even after she quit playing at church for 55 years, she still did not refuse to play should a First Nations person ask her.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; line-height: 14pt;">At one point she decided to give 15 years of summer holidays to organize and support a summer camp on the shores of Winagami Lake for local children ages 6 to about 15. Unfortunately this lasted only 10 years because the church group who were her financial backers felt they had to close it five years short of her goal because parents were taking their children on holidays with them more and more and thus there were fewer children going to camp. This broke her heart. Under her leadership, she budgeted from February on for the collection of food, she chose the camp leader and helped him/her to lead and to organize activities; she supervised the ladies who helped at the camp.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; line-height: 14pt;">At the library where she worked as a VOLUNTEER for 40 years, she went to work daily from 1 to 5:30 as if it were a paying job, and on the job she was continually searching for better and newer ways to get people in and to improve the library. In fact she learned the computer at the age of 75 and then taught it to all her staff.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; line-height: 14pt;">Through the library she organized

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; line-height: 14pt;">2) cultural groups

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; line-height: 14pt;">3) craft groups

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; line-height: 14pt;">4) craft and art appreciation days where local people displayed their talents and thus they, their relatives and friends (who had not always entered a library) were brought into the library;

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; line-height: 14pt;">5) distribution of books to shut-ins

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; line-height: 14pt;">Another thing that she did was to organize various choirs. At one time and for years she had a church choir and a community choir. Both met once a week. Besides that, in order to give quality music at church, she spent one period per week at church practicing.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; line-height: 14pt;">When Katimavik was in vogue, she had various people work in the library for her and while other people in the community complained that these people were not carrying their weight or being organized or really working, Mrs. Limoges’ people worked and learned all the time they were with her.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; line-height: 14pt;"> I can recall one young woman who came from another province and was sort of a hippy and had never been taught natural skills saying, “I don’t know what I’d have done had I not come here. Now I can go out and apply for a job as well as do hobbies Mrs. Limoges has TAUGHT me to do.”

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; line-height: 14pt;">She also organized and worked at a cultural committee for years and under her push we had one cultural activity per month for years: for example, an author doing readings of his/her book; a musical recital from the University; a choir group, etc.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; line-height: 14pt;">As member of her church group, she worked on projects to send items to the poor and the disadvantaged; she always worked actively for community suppers, dinners, bazaars, for all sorts of projects. Her husband had always been a member of the Royal Canadian Legion since he was a veteran; she supported him actively always there not only playing for the November 11th celebration, but organizing choirs and sing-songs for the day.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; line-height: 14pt;">While she was still at the library and aged 79 and 80 she took on the writing of the second volume of the McLennan history book. People do not know how much organization that requires; I do for I worked closely with her. For 18 months, she had a committee of 25 women working under her and I know that those who worked with her knew what she had done in the community and were eager and happy to help. What changes has she wrought in the community? Plenty although not all can be measured in material terms.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">MARIE Beaudoin was originally from Grande Rivière in the Gaspé region of Quebec.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;"> Around 1898-1899 she received a few letters from her father-in-law ( her mother's second husband ), François-Xavier Ladéroute. Ladéroute described Kirkland Creek in the Yukon where he lived as a real paradise where he held various important functions: post master, mayor, bed-and-board owner, etc. The stories of Ladéroute combined with what the media was saying about the Klondike gave Marie a seductive picture of the North.
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif;">During the Second World War, her husband died of cardiac arrest. The young woman who lived in Montreal, found herself alone with two children, and limited finances. The enchanting descriptions of the Yukon which had been made by her father-in-law came back to tempt her. In 1918, she decided to begin a new life and crossed the country to Kirkman Creek with her two children (Aline and Wilbrode). It did not take her long after her arrival to realize that Ladéroute had neglected some details in his letters.: Kirkman Creek was about 100 miles (160 km) from Dawson City; the inhabitants were mostly sheep and a few dogs; the winters were long and cold, and her father-in-law's style of life did not appeal to her at all!

TURGEON, CHARLES BLAISE-A JOYFUL MAN

Charles Blaise Turgeon was born in 1856 at St. Isidore in the Province of Quebec. He left his native province in 1880 and went to Wisconsin, US, and set up a business in wood and in hotels. In 1893, he went North going through the Chilkoot Pass. Accompanying him was John Tremblay, a Klondike pioneer who was going to the Yukon for the second or third time. While on his trip North, Turgeon spent a bit of time in Circle City, Alaska before settling in Dawson City where he worked in the hotel business.

He kept a personal journal in which he wrote about daily events. On one of the pages there is a note concerning a loan of $1000 dollars to Tex Richard, a world celebrity in sports.
When the Gold Rush started in the Klondike, Turgeon was in Ogilvie, a small village on the right shore of the Yukon River about 50 miles (80 km) above Dawson city. He arrived there a bit late, but if we believe what he wrote in his journals, he was able to obtain quite a few mining stakes on the richest streams of the Klondike. Among these mining concessions, was no. 8 Bonanza which he re-sold a bit later for $65,000. He also owned interests in the no. 35 Eldorado with "Swifter Bill" Gates, a well-known wealthy man in the Klondike. In other words, his financial methods enabled him to purchase what he wanted, especially land. On June 19, 1898 he bought lot no. 8 of block H in Dawson City. In 1920, he was the owner of 160 acres (65 hectares) in the Yukon. Furthermore, between 1920 and 1926 he obtained lands located in the Mayo region.

His businesses were not always that prosperous. One day he bought a steam-boat , the Golden Star, and started to transport merchandise between Whitehorse and Dawson City. During his second trip the Golden Star sank. The steamboat was about the size of the Keno boat and had merchandise valued at $100,000. After having left Dawson City Turgeon prospected in the region of the McQuesten River during six or second years. In 1908, he took part in the small gold rush on Dublin Creek, in the Mayo district. During the following years, he was very busy in various jobs. For example he did carpentry, and trapping. Charles Blais Turgeon was a trapper until the age of 77.

In August 1915, he was a trapper when he married a Native woman, Maisie, from Mayo who had three daughters: Ellen, Julia, and Suzanne. During the 1930's the family lived in the Mayo region on a large lot and had a wonderful garden. Charles and Maisie raised their grand-daughters: Rose (Wood), Mary (McDiarmid), and Ruth (McDonald).
Warm and always joyful, Charles B. Turgeon was well known and respected by everyone. He was described as a man who conversed pleasantly, who never spoke meanly about anyone and who had a good sense of humor. He adored the Yukon so much so that he never left it even when he had repeated invitations from his niece in San Francisco, Mrs. Alexine Chadborn.
He died in Mayo on October 21, 1938 aged 82, quite a few years after his wife had died.

One day, the Dawson Daily News had announced, in error, the drowning of engineer Taché when, in fact, it was his assistant who drowned.

The faulty article may be summarized as this: While Taché was preparing to dynamite a rocky wall in the Five Fingers Rapids, the canoe in which he should have been traveling, over-turned . Two men had the good idea of hooking on to the canoe while Taché and one of his assistants swam trying to reach the shore. The latter was successful. During this time a steamboat got closer in order to help Taché who was caught among the rapids. Regardless of heroic life-saving rescue work, they were not able to save him. Taché was a man very well respected by everyone and a supervisor who was very well appreciated by his employees. He was the nephew of the Archbishop of Saint-Boniface.

The news of Taché’s death was soon put to rest in the Yukon; however it had reached his family in Ottawa. Marie-Louise wrote in her journal, “Poor Maman! It is only upon receiving a letter from Papa who wrote describing the accident that she was finally convinced …Papa was going down the Five Finger rapids by canoe with his men when one of them fell into the water and was carried away by the current.

In the same letter to his wife, Joseph Charles Taché told them that the following summer he was going to bring them to the Yukon to live with him. Therefore Joseph Charles Taché returned to the Yukon in July 1900 accompanied by his wife, his daughters and a new assistant, Paul-Emile Mercier. They took the train to Vancouver, where they spent a few days before embarking on the steam-boat, Princess May, which took them to Skagway in Alaska.

This narrow railroad which opened in June 1900 was one of the greatest feats in the history of engineering, and Joseph Charles Taché had played an important role in this development.

On June 29, 1901, the Taché family were present at their daughter, Marie-Louise’s wedding to Paul-Emile Mercier. Joseph Charles Taché and his wife remained in the Territories until November 1901.

From 1902 to 1911, Jean Charles Taché directed the public federal works in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean area of Quebec. Then he was named land surveyor for the Gulf region in his native city where he was then elected mayor in 1951. He retired in 1930 and with his wife lived in a Hospice run by the Sisters of Charity.

Joseph Charles Taché died in Rimouski on March 7, 1939; six years after his wife’s death. According to his desires, he was buried in his Zouave costume in memory of the times he spent serving the Pope in the Canadian Zouaves Batallion.

Originally from Amiens in France, Mathilde Ruby Scott arrived in the Yukon in 1935. During 27 years, she worked at the oldest profession in the world. More than only a house-tenant she was a pillar in the community. The newspapers of the era talked about her in very respectful terms, “Madam, beloved and appreciated by everyone.” If she was appreciated thus, it was because of her legendary generosity. She served so many banquets to the poor at Christmas time that no one was able to keep track of them!

At her death, the local newspapers rendered her great homage. However, in 1962 her pretty little two-storey house no. 233 on the 2nd Avenue in Dawson City had to close its doors because of a federal edict on prostitution. Then Parks Canada restored the building and “Ruby’s Place” became a historic site.

Pierre Rigaud was from the Loire region of France. In 1935, at the age of 26, he was among the Oblate priests who were sent to the Yukon and to the north of British Columbia to work in the areas where the contractors of the Alaska highway were passing through. After one year in Saskatchewan, he settled in Burwash Landing in the Yukon.

His original reticence to live in the Yukon vanished in front of the beautiful wild scenery.

Father Rigaud continued to work in various regions of the territory. He built the church at Snag, at Ross River and at Faro. He loved the great outdoors and sports; he even arrived first in a dogsled race in the 1963. Sourdough Carnival Rendez-vous..

The Faro arena was named after him in order to celebrate the contribution that the priests made to minor hockey. In 1990, after 21 years in Faro, Father Faro was sent to Teslin. He was still in the Yukon in 1997 and was working at Haines Junction.
In January 1899, seven French-Canadian gold seekers went to the “ La Presse” newspaper in Montreal to be photographed and to announce their return and their success. None of them had returned with less than $20,000 in their pockets. All together they could have had a half-million dollars.

Two amongst them returned to the Yukon. Georges Demers, from Saint Nicolas in the province of Quebec, came back in March 1899 and with some associates on July 28, 1899 founded “The Yukon Telephone Syndicate” in Dawson City.

Gustave L’Heureux from Saint Hyacinthe in Quebec, married Rose Saint-Arnaud in Dawson City in 1903, and two years later had their son baptized there. In 1910, he was the owner of the hotel and saloon in Granville in the Yukon.

Odilon Binet from Rivière-du-Loup, PQ and Fernand Renaud from Ontario, moved to California. P. Honoré Doré, originally from Cap-Santé in the region of Quebec, settled in Quebec where he was the owner of the Eldorado Hotel and of two other businesses. With his wife, Malvina Pouliot, they raised 15 children. We don’t know what became of the two Quebecois Napoléon Dupras from Sainte-Hyacinthe and Georges Lamarre from Saint Polycarpe.
